We rush to and from everywhere and in everything we do. If a web page doesn’t load, we press refresh 30 times. We honk at someone if they don’t go as soon as the light turns green. We go to drive thrus because we are far too busy to make dinner. And if they take longer than 3 minutes to give us our dinner, even if we are saving over an hour by not making any, we become impatient with the workers of the fast food restaurant.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if we could go back to the days where you would send a letter in the mail and wait weeks to receive one back. The days where you couldn’t get on a plane to travel but rather you have to take a horse. The days where you cooked your meals over fire instead of throwing food into a microwave.
I know some people hate the thought of all this but just imagine how patient we would be. Technology has made many impatient, not all but many. Don’t let it make you impatient, don’t let it make you unkind to others.
I love receiving mail. I love opening an envelope. You can’t compare it to getting an email, it’s so different. I received a package from Sweden with some books and chocolates, I received a letter from my uncle in Afghanistan with updated photos of my cousin, I received a bracelet from a friend in Italy and that bracelet means so much to me now. I want to slow things down, I want to live life and never take a moment for granted. Take a moment to inhale patience and exhale love.
amen.
